A highlight of the 2008 Manchester Jazz
Festival is this presentation of new work by
the internationally-renowned guitarist Mike
Walker. Commissioned by mjf, Ropes fuses the
soundworlds of contemporary classical, jazz and
rock’n’roll and showcases the virtuosic clarinet
playing of Mike’s long-time musical partner
Iain Dixon. Mike’s sharp and adventurous sense
of melodic and harmonic development and
his insatiable performance energy will be very
much to the fore, both in the composition and
performance of this ‘Hendrix-meets-Turnage’
suite. With the backdrop of a full 30-piece
string orchestra, this concert will be both a
spectacle on a scale not often heard in the jazz
idiom, and a very rare chance to witness a true
fusion of jazz and strings that will explode any
pre-conceptions - and your ear-drums!
