Barry Douglas is to perform Shostakovich's Piano Concerto No 1
with award-winning trumpeter Alison Balsom as part of the Mostly
Mozart Festival. Having received critical acclaim when they last
performed the concerto with Camerata Ireland at Dublin Castle in
June 2007, the pair reunites for the concert at the Barbican with
the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.
The programme will include Beethoven's Piano Concerto No 5, the
Overture from The Magic Flute as well as an arrangement of the
Mozart's Queen of the Night aria for trumpet by Alison Balsom.
Irish pianist Barry Douglas is one of Britain's most
charismatic performers. He continues to enjoy a major international
solo career which has developed since winning the Gold Medal at the
1986 Tchaikovsky International Piano Competition in Moscow. In 1999
he founded Camerata Ireland, an all-Irish chamber orchestra with
players from both Northern and Southern Ireland to celebrate the
wealth of Irish musical talent and he continues as Artistic
Director of the Clandeboye Festival, Ireland, founded in 2004 and
the International Piano Festival, Manchester.
