Warning over exploding iPods
THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT HAS ISSUED A WARNING TO CONSUMERS AFTER RECORDING SEVERAL INCIDENTS OF IPOD NANO MP3 PLAYERS BURSTING INTO FLAMES.
Three first-generation Nanos overheated while recharging in and
near the capital, Tokyo, with sparks igniting nearby objects. No
one was injured in the incidents, which include reports of
'chest-high flames'.
Manufacturer Apple confirmed that older models could overheat but
said that 'less that 0.001 per cent' of Nanos were at risk,
adding that no other models were affected. It has offered to
replace any fault devices.
In 2006, Apple recalled 1.8 million lithium-ion laptop batteries
that were prone to overheating.
